The Challenge

Only one in ten women have the opportunity to complete secondary education. This is the reality in Ethiopia today, where according to the 2022 UN Education for All Development Index, just 7.4% of women and 13.1% of men aged 25 and older have finished secondary education. Even in Addis Ababa, only 30% of boys and 28% of girls enroll in secondary schools – with rural areas facing even greater challenges.

These aren't just statistics – they represent millions of young Ethiopians whose potential remains untapped. In rural communities, the situation is particularly critical, with many students struggling to achieve the basic passing mark of 2.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average in their secondary education certificate. Currently, only 69% of female and 78% of male students reach this threshold.

Ethiopia's education crisis isn't just about numbers – it's about a systemic challenge that Teach For Ethiopia helps solve. Our students face overwhelming obstacles:

  • Overcrowded classrooms that stifle individual attention.

  • Underfunded schools lacking essential resources.

  • A critical shortage of qualified teachers.

  • Limited access to quality education, especially in rural areas.

Teach For Ethiopia empowers future leaders to transform Ethiopian education, building a movement to revolutionize learning from the classroom up. Here's what sets our Fellowship apart:

  • Full Financial Support: A competitive salary for young changemakers, who make a difference.

  • World-Class Training: Intensive leadership and teaching preparation that will set our participants apart in any future career.

  • Real Responsibility: Our Teaching Fellows lead their own classroom and impact hundreds of young lives from day one.

  • Mentorship & Support: Continuous professional development from experienced educators and leaders from our team.

We believe that lasting change comes from within communities. That's why our program:

  • Partners deeply with local communities to understand their unique needs and aspirations.

  • Empowers Fellows to become cultural bridges, connecting classroom learning with community knowledge.

  • Takes a holistic approach to education, addressing both academic and social barriers to learning.

  • Prioritizes gender equity, with special focus on empowering female leaders and girls.
